Louw Seeks to Strengthen Bok Scrum in Durban

Springbok prop Wilco Louw is fully committed to doing everything possible to help the Boks achieve scrum dominance in their Rugby Championship showdown against the Pumas in Durban this Saturday. Like his teammates, he is preparing for a tough battle.

With the Wallabies, All Blacks, Boks, and Pumas all vying fiercely for the championship—just two points apart and only two rounds remaining—Louw emphasized that the players are concentrated on executing their respective roles to enhance the team’s chances of defending their title.

The formidable Bok prop praised the Pumas’ scrum, stating, “They’ve earned numerous scrum penalties against the All Blacks and Wallabies this year, showcasing their dedication to the set piece, which has significantly improved. We anticipate a fiercely contested match on Saturday.”

As one of the substitutes this weekend, Louw expressed indifference regarding whether he starts or comes off the bench. After making his Test debut in 2017 and reinstating himself in the squad recently, he is eager to achieve his 23rd cap on Saturday.

“Every player has a duty to fulfill as we aim to advance as a team,” he remarked.

“It’s a tremendous privilege to play, no matter if I’m donning the No 18 or No 3 jersey. For me, it’s all about putting on that green jersey and providing support in any way needed by the team.

“Of course, coming off the bench assigns me a specific role, with my primary emphasis on scrumming and mauling. We aim for dominance in the set piece, which will be my main responsibility, while enjoying the game and demonstrating quality rugby. Ensuring our systems are solid and being prepared is crucial.”

On reflecting about his journey back to being a regular in the Bok squad this season, Louw mentioned: “Returning to the Vodacom Bulls from Harlequins has been wonderful, and I’m truly enjoying my rugby. The Bulls have a superb pack, allowing me to collaborate with outstanding talents like Gerhard Steenekamp, Grobbies (Johan Grobbelaar), and Jannie (Jan-Hendrik Wessels). Everyone shares the common goal of dominating scrums.”

“This season has been both fulfilling and enjoyable. When you are passionate about what you do, it ignites your motivation. It’s an incredible honor to be part of the Springbok team and to compete against the best in the world. Continuous growth and development are imperative.”

The match is set to kick off at 17:10 and will be live on SuperSport.
