Spurs Ask SAFA to Reevaluate AmaZulu’s Signing of Bern
Cape Town Spurs have lodged a formal appeal with the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) Appeals Board regarding the transfer of midfielder Liam Bern to AmaZulu, sparking a new series of legal challenges in South African football.
Cape Town Spurs Seek Transfer Fees
AmaZulu recently acquired Bern as a free agent after the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) ruled in his favor. Nonetheless, Spurs contend that they are entitled to a transfer fee and have escalated the issue to SAFA.
This development was anticipated as Spurs had previously initiated similar actions against Kaizer Chiefs concerning former players Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman.
Spurs’ Objections to Liam Bern’s Transfer
Bern underwent a prolonged contractual dispute with Spurs, who initially obstructed his transfer to AmaZulu, claiming he was still under contract and not eligible for free agency.
However, Bern’s legal representatives, supported by AmaZulu, appealed to the PSL DRC, referencing a PSL regulation that nullifies contracts when a team is relegated to the ABC Motsepe League (the amateur league). With Spurs’ relegation at the end of last season, Bern was recognized as eligible to declare his free agency.

Precedent Established by Velebayi and Baartman
Bern’s situation mirrors that of his former Spurs teammates, Velebayi and Baartman, who also sought free agency following the team’s relegation. Like Bern, both received favorable outcomes at the DRC and subsequently signed with Chiefs, although their ability to play is currently on hold pending Spurs’ appeal.
As a result, AmaZulu is unable to include Bern in their lineup until the SAFA Appeals Board issues a definitive ruling.
Conclusion of the SAFA Appeals Board’s Decision
The Appeals Board serves as the final authority in this legal matter. Once a verdict is issued, Spurs will have no further avenues for appeal.
If the decision is rendered in favor of AmaZulu and Bern, the midfielder will be permitted to join the match immediately. Conversely, if Spurs prevail, AmaZulu may be required to pay a transfer fee or risk losing the player altogether.
