Ozil has been a longtime supporter of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Ozil has taken a position in Turkey’s ruling AK Party’s central council at a congress meeting held in Ankara.

The football superstar was one of 39 new individuals appointed to a key decision-making body called the Central Decision and Executive Board (MKYK).

Ozil, who finished his club career with Istanbul Basaksehir, has shown unwavering support for Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A large assembly gathered in a sports venue for the grand congress as Erdogan was re-elected for his ninth term as AKP’s leader.

The congress featured 31 representatives from 16 political parties across 13 nations, along with 62 ambassadors and 34 mission representatives.

In 2019, Ozil selected Conservative leader Erdogan as his best man during his wedding to Amine Gulse, a former Miss Turkey.

His relationship with Erdogan often leads to controversy.

A photo taken in 2018 of Ozil and fellow German player Ilkay Gundogan alongside Erdogan resulted in significant political backlash in Germany.

Ozil, once hailed as a symbol of a multicultural Germany, retired from the national team shortly thereafter.

He stated that fans displayed racism, expressing: “I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose.”

The third-generation Turkish-German was born in Gelsenkirchen and played a crucial role in his nation’s success during the 2014 World Cup.

He earned 92 caps for Germany and was named the national team’s player of the year five times since 2011.

Ozil won numerous titles with Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, and Arsenal throughout a stellar club career.
