City Officials Remove Billboard Exposing ‘Water Mafia’ Allegations Against eThekwini Municipality
Durban – Democratic Alliance (DA) eThekwini Mayoral Candidate Haniff Hoosen claims that local government officials are evading accountability; they have taken down a billboard concerning the city’s water tanker mafia.
The billboard stated: “YOU CAN STOP THE WATER TANKER MAFIA. VOTE DA FOR WATER IN YOUR TAPS”
eThekwini authorities demanded the billboard’s removal and proceeded to do so when the DA declined.
“The DA’s stance was unmistakable. We had no intention of taking down the billboard, yet it was dismantled regardless,” Hoosen remarked.
“The city has opted to challenge a billboard, even threatening legal action to protect its incompetence, rather than investing resources in repairing the pipes.
Hoosen asserted that the DA’s billboard reveals the officials who failed to avert Durban’s water crisis.
“The water tanker mafia in eThekwini has siphoned off hundreds of millions of rands of taxpayer money, while those in charge did nothing to stop this,” stated the DA eThekwini Mayoral Candidate.
The dispute over the billboard arises just weeks before the Local Government Elections scheduled for 4 November 2026.
“The choice in this election is between taps or tankers,” Hoosen emphasized.
“Political parties that engage in corruption and patronage will leave communities reliant on expensive water tankers that provide unsafe, inconsistent water.
“However, the DA will restore water to your taps.”
