55th Budget Speech Competition Launched by Nedbank and Old Mutual

Johannesburg  – Nedbank and Old Mutual have officially announced the opening of entries for the 55th Nedbank and Old Mutual Budget Speech Competition.

Since its establishment in 1972, the Budget Speech Competition has invited generations of students to critically engage with South Africa’s fiscal and economic priorities.

As the competition embarks on its 55th year, it is broadening its scope beyond traditional economics students to foster a more inclusive national platform for nurturing the country’s future economic and public policy leaders.

The updated competition framework will now accept a wider variety of participants from South African tertiary institutions, including undergraduate students taking Economics as a module, regardless of their primary field of study; postgraduate students in economics-related areas; students from Economics, Finance, Development Studies, Business, Public Policy, and similar disciplines; as well as students from universities and participating TVET colleges.

This strategic adjustment reflects the evolving needs of students and underscores the growing significance of diverse perspectives in shaping South Africa’s economic future.

It also aims to enhance participation from historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs) and provide greater access to opportunities for aspiring economic leaders.

“The competition has consistently focused on discovering exceptional talent, but the challenges of today necessitate fresh insights from a broader range of fields,” remarked Nedbank Senior Economist, Isaac Matshego.

“By widening participation, we are offering more young South Africans the chance to develop the analytical, communication, and leadership skills essential for making meaningful contributions to the nation’s future.”

Izak Odendaal, Investment Strategist at Old Mutual Wealth, emphasizes that the Budget Speech Competition plays a crucial role in cultivating the analytical capabilities needed to tackle South Africa’s economic issues.

“Strong economies thrive on informed discussions, rigorous analysis, and a consistent influx of talented individuals who can navigate complex policy matters,” Odendaal stated.

“The Budget Speech Competition allows students to apply economic theories to real-world challenges and develop evidence-based solutions.

“By fostering critical thinking and intellectual curiosity, the competition nurtures future economists, policymakers, and business leaders who will contribute to South Africa’s sustainable growth and prosperity.”

Supporting this vision is a renewed purpose that positions the Budget Speech Competition as more than just an essay-writing contest.

The program seeks to challenge, nurture, and acknowledge the next generation of South African economic leaders by establishing a national platform where students critically engage with fiscal policy, enhance their analytical and communication skills, and propose practical solutions to the nation’s most urgent economic challenges.

Reinforcing its commitment to excellence, the 55th edition features an enhanced prize pool of R630 000, marking the largest in the competition’s history.

In the undergraduate category, prizes of R100 000, R80 000, and R60 000 will be awarded to the top three entrants respectively. Postgraduate winners will earn R180 000, R130 000, and R80 000 for first, second, and third places.

Beyond the monetary rewards, finalists will gain national recognition, executive exposure, media profiling opportunities, valuable networking experiences, and access to an influential alumni network that continually shapes South Africa’s economic and policy landscape.

Participants in the competition will need to submit original essays that address current fiscal, economic, and public policy challenges in South Africa, showcasing their ability to analyze intricate issues, apply policy insights, and suggest practical, evidence-based solutions.
