Messi’s Disappointing Penalty Miss Against Egypt Makes World Cup Headlines

LIONEL MESSI has now recorded his second missed penalty in the World Cup, an unfortunate milestone in the sport’s history.

The Argentina superstar becomes the first player to miss TWO penalties within a single World Cup tournament.

At 39, Messi had his penalty saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir on Wednesday, just weeks after he missed another against Austria by shooting wide.

Shobeir correctly dove, deflecting Messi’s shot away in the 20th minute.

Visibly taken aback, the football icon’s short run-up failed to yield results once again.

Commentator Jon Champion labeled this as an “unwanted World Cup record.”

With this latest miss, Messi has now failed to convert 34 out of 150 career penalties, leading to a success rate of just 77 percent.

Notably, he has missed HALF of his penalty attempts at the World Cup.

Out of his last eight attempts in World Cups, four have ended unsuccessfully.

In the match against Austria, he attempted a delayed shot, sending the ball wide — perhaps unsettled by the goalkeeper’s lack of early movement.

Conversely, in the encounter with Egypt, he aimed for power but struck too high, failing to challenge the keeper.

Lionel Scaloni’s side could have significantly benefitted had their star player scored, especially after falling behind to Yasser Ibrahim’s header in the first half.

The match in Atlanta began poorly for the defending champions Argentina, who struggled against the underdogs Cape Verde in the last-32.
