Sheriff Takes Control of ANC Property at Luthuli House Due to R85 Million Debt for Advertising Materials
Johannesburg – The Sheriff of the High Court, seeking to recover an outstanding debt of approximately R85 million, has confiscated desks, chairs, couches, computers, fridges, microwave ovens, and other furnishings from Luthuli House, the headquarters of the African National Congress (ANC).
This action stems from Ezulweni Investments (PTY) LTD’s legal efforts to reclaim around R85 million from the ANC, related to an unpaid contract for election banners, posters, and campaign materials in anticipation of South Africa’s 2019 general elections.
In the ongoing legal dispute between Ezulweni and the ANC, the sheriff was recently directed to “attach and execute the movable assets of the execution debtor, the African National Congress of Chief Albert Luthuli House, no 54 Sauer Street, Johannesburg”.
The case has advanced through the court system, culminating in a decision from the Constitutional Court, which dismissed the ANC’s appeal on 4 September 2025.
The ANC has also faced legal expenses, including those stemming from the sheriff’s enforcement actions.
Following a Writ of Execution against property issued on Friday, 3 October 2025, the sheriff visited Luthuli House and seized assets valued at R140,000.
Items that have been seized include:
- 100 desks
- 200 chairs
- 9 couches and lounge chairs
- 9 fridges
- 9 microwave ovens
- 50 filing cabinets
- 20 computers
- 9 coffee tables
The sheriff has also been instructed to attach bank accounts belonging to the ANC.
