President Ramaphosa Offers Condolences on the Passing of Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga

Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa has expressed heartfelt condolences, on behalf of the government and the citizens of South Africa, to the “government and people of Kenya” following the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The 80-year-old, a prominent figure in African politics, died from a heart attack in India, where he was undergoing medical treatment, as confirmed by Devamatha Hospital in Kerala, India, on Wednesday, 15 October 2025.

The Presidency in South Africa released a statement highlighting that President Ramaphosa’s thoughts and prayers are with the Odinga family, as well as with friends and supporters of the late former Prime Minister, including the Orange Democratic Movement.

In the statement, President Ramaphosa noted: “Kenya and our continent have lost a committed and selfless leader, whom I had the honor of knowing and working with as a friend and brother.”

“Raila Odinga was dedicated to the advancement of his nation and the pursuit of peace across our continent, exemplified by his appointment by the African Union to foster peace in Côte d’Ivoire in 2010.”

“He remained unwavering in his principles and vision, even in the face of considerable personal sacrifices and challenges. He was a leader who placed the welfare of his country and continent above all else.”
