Introducing IP Vault: A Programmable Solution for Accessing On-Chain IP Data

Story Foundation has announced the upcoming launch of a secure on-chain storage solution for intellectual property assets, allowing for programmable access and monetization opportunities.

Summary

  • Story Foundation has disclosed its plans to introduce IP Vault, an on-chain storage option for sensitive intellectual property materials.
  • The Vault is projected to launch later this year, starting with a devnet and progressing to a testnet and mainnet in 2026.

In February, Story Protocol debuted its layer-1 network designed for programmable intellectual property and has now broadened its ecosystem with the IP Vault. Supported by Andreessen Horowitz, this initiative allows for the tokenization, licensing, and monetization of IP assets directly on-chain, eliminating the reliance on intermediaries.

Amidst growing adoption and integration, the ecosystem encounters challenges in securely accessing and storing sensitive IP materials. The Story Foundation is confident that IP Vault will resolve these issues for large corporations, IP holders, and ecosystem developers.

“IP Vault is a secure on-chain storage area associated with IP assets, safeguarding confidential IP information within Story. Access to these vaults is limited to IP owners and their licensees,” the Story Foundation stated in a blog post.

What are the use cases?

According to Story Foundation, the Vault will safely store encryption keys essential for accessing files hosted on platforms like IPFS and Shelby.

This feature will create a programmable access layer for intellectual property assets, with IP being directly accessible on-chain through Story (IP)’s layer-1 blockchain.

As a private storage solution, the Vault will not only offer secure storage for encryption keys but also empower IP owners to establish conditions for decryption. This introduces new monetization possibilities in the IP marketplace, especially concerning artificial intelligence and real-world assets.

Real-world implementations include Poseidon, an AI-focused initiative supported by a16z and incubated by Story. This platform will leverage IP Vault to protect its AI training datasets.

“As a complete data layer, Poseidon bridges the gap between supply and demand for specialized, IP-approved training data. IP Vault ensures secure access to these datasets along with their respective on-chain IP assets,” noted Sandeep Chinchali, co-founder of Poseidon.

Story intends to launch IP Vault on devnet later this year, with testnet and mainnet releases expected in 2026.
