Summary

  • Centrifuge, Janus Henderson, and S&P DJI have introduced the initial licensed S&P 500 index fund
  • The SPXA index will track the S&P 500, making it available for DAOs and on-chain funds

Tokenization is swiftly making its way onto Wall Street. On Thursday, Sept. 25, Centrifuge revealed the launch of the Janus Henderson Anemoy S&P 500 Fund (SPXA), which is recognized as the first S&P 500 index fund sanctioned by S&P Dow Jones Indices, a top index provider.

This development represents a significant advancement for real-world assets in the crypto space. The SPXA fund will provide exposure to the S&P 500 index through on-chain finance, DeFi platforms, and DAOs, allowing traders to leverage transparent holdings, programmability, and composability across DeFi protocols.

“Traditional finance benchmarks continue to impact the global economy, with the S&P 500 being pivotal,” remarked Bhaji Illuminati, CEO of Centrifuge. “Indices simplify the on-chain integration of stocks: they are easy to manage, collateral-ready, and enhance liquidity in ways individual securities cannot. SPXA is a vital step toward making all assets investable on-chain, accessible to global investors at any time.”

Janus Henderson, a prominent active asset manager with $457 billion in assets under management, will serve as the sub-investment manager for the fund.

“Launching SPXA with Centrifuge aligns seamlessly with our blockchain strategy, introducing the world’s largest equity index to a new era of investors,” stated Nick Cherney, Head of Innovation at Janus Henderson. “This is just the start of a broader initiative to strengthen our tokenization capabilities and ensure secure, efficient access to global markets.”

S&P Dow Jones Indices, which oversees the S&P 500 index, gives the SPXA tokenized fund a foundation of institutional trust.

“Collaborating with Centrifuge enables investors to gain direct access to the S&P 500 Index within a blockchain environment that fosters liquidity, transparency, and interoperability,” noted Cameron Drinkwater, Chief Product Officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices. “Blockchain offers a transformative opportunity for S&P DJI, and Centrifuge aligns with our goal of building the future of index-linked financial products.”
