Inmate Passes Away at Oudtshoorn Correctional Centre Following Drug Incident; Guards Assaulted

Oudtshoorn – A clash between inmates and prison personnel at the Oudtshoorn Medium A Correctional Centre in the Western Cape turned violent, leading to the death of one inmate and injuries to several wardens.

According to Singabakho Nxumalo, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, the violent incident, which resulted in injuries to officials and the death of an inmate, occurred on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

In detailing the events leading up to this tragic situation, Nxumalo remarked: “On the morning of August 6, 2025, a search operation was carried out at the centre.”

“During this operation, inmates assigned to Room 005 of A-Section initially resisted compliance.”

“With proper intervention, officials managed to gain access and proceed with the search.”

Nxumalo indicated that tensions escalated when some inmates opposed the search, but officials succeeded in regaining control and completing the operation.

“Numerous contraband items, including cellphones and drugs, were confiscated,” Nxumalo stated.

“In an apparent act of retaliation, on August 7, 2025, at approximately 07:55, inmates from Room 005 executed a premeditated and violent assault on officials during the unlocking procedures.”

At that time, 18 officials were present in the correctional facility.

“Four of them sustained injuries, some involving stab wounds to the face, head, and back,” Nxumalo stated.

“They received medical treatment, and the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) has been activated to support them and their families.”

“One inmate involved in the altercation suffered injuries and, despite medical attention, tragically passed away.”

“This loss of life is regrettable and will be subject to further investigation in accordance with departmental protocols.”

The National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, expressed concern over the unacceptable behavior of inmates during the search operation.

“The safety of both officials and inmates is our utmost priority,” Thobakgale emphasized.

“Incidents like this are extremely troubling, and we are committed to a thorough investigation of all contributing factors.”

Nxumalo reported that the situation at the centre is now under control.

“Inmates involved in the stabbings have been placed in solitary confinement pending disciplinary action,” Nxumalo noted.

“A-Unit has been re-searched, resulting in the recovery of additional weapons.”

“All inmate activities and visits have been suspended until further notice.”

Nxumalo asserted that the department remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of both officials and inmates while maintaining order across all correctional facilities.
