Riveiro Imposes Fines on Pirates After Player Exits
Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro expresses strong confidence in the club’s prospects for the upcoming season, emphasizing that the team’s evolution is part of a broader strategy designed to attract the ideal successor.
Riveiro is set to leave the club upon the conclusion of his three-year tenure, during which the team has demonstrated remarkable development this season.
Pirates are on track to achieve their highest points total under Riveiro, amassing 52 points after just 23 matches, following their comeback 2-1 win over Golden Arrows in the Betway Premiership at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Tuesday.
In Riveiro’s first season, Pirates gained 54 points, followed by 50 points last season. With 52 points already accrued and five matches still to play, they are well-positioned to surpass both previous totals in Riveiro’s final season.
Additionally, Pirates have reached the CAF Champions League semi-finals this season, marking significant progress after not advancing past the preliminary rounds last year. This achievement, combined with the chance to secure another domestic cup double for the third consecutive year under the Spanish coach, highlights a sustained period of success.

The departure of a successful coach often raises questions about the new manager’s approach and the potential disruption of the team’s progress. New appointments may lead to significant changes in playing style and player roster, potentially jeopardizing the momentum established under Riveiro.
“Did you catch my earlier response?” Riveiro replied when asked about continuity during the post-match press conference on Tuesday. “This initiative reflects the club’s vision, not just Riveiro’s. I’ve addressed this query several times. The club is clear about its direction. The right choice will be made.”
“They will receive the necessary support and will find a solid foundation to build upon as we wrap up the season. Football goes through cycles, and Orlando Pirates is a prominent institution; no changes will occur simply because Riveiro is here or not. The Buccaneers [Pirates fans] need not worry; the future looks bright for the club and will exceed expectations.”
While the team has shown improvement this season, it seems unlikely that Pirates will catch Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership title race, as Sundowns are nearing their eighth consecutive league championship.
Pirates now turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs at the Durban venue on Saturday, with hopes of achieving an unprecedented third consecutive victory in this tournament.
