Transition to Cashless Payments: Motor Licensing Offices in KwaZulu-Natal Introduce Secure Payment System
Durban – KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma has revealed a “historic transition” to a cashless payment system in motor licensing offices, which handles billions of rand.
“In light of a rise in cash-in-transit heists in KZN, we are pleased to announce that as of yesterday, (1 April 2025), we have made a historic shift to a cashless payment system in our motor licensing offices throughout the province,” MEC Duma stated on Wednesday, (2 April 2025).
Recent crime statistics indicate that there were 29 cash-in-transit heists nationwide between October 2024 and December 2024.
KZN recorded the highest number with 10 incidents, followed by Gauteng, which had eight heists.
“We appreciate the members of the public who have welcomed this change and are now utilizing debit and credit cards in our motor licensing offices,” MEC Duma expressed.
“We believe that embracing digital transformation will enable our department to save every cent and contribute to funding essential service delivery programs of this democratic government.”
MEC Duma further noted: “Importantly, we wish to inform you that during the financial year 2024/2025, we have collected over R2.3 billion from our motor licensing offices.
“These funds are being redirected to Treasury for further distribution towards health, education, social development, water, electricity, housing construction, road infrastructure, and various other government departments.
“In conclusion, we commend our dedicated management and all staff members in our licensing offices for instilling hope for a brighter future.”
