Pair of individuals given life imprisonment for killing 93-year-old person
A couple from Gauteng, Pranavan Moodley, 32, and his wife Samantha, 34, have been sentenced to life behind bars for the heinous murder and robbery of 93-year-old Yetsee Chan in his Edenvale residence.
The duo was apprehended and charged in relation to the crime that took place on September 23, 2020.

Investigation And Trial
Sergeant Madimetja Maluleke of the Ekurhuleni North Trio Task Team led the inquiry, which unveiled that the couple had invaded the victim’s premises while his son was away.
CCTV footage captured the couple entering and exiting the suburb, connecting them to the crime.

Senior State advocate Maro Papachristoforou presented circumstantial evidence, including the recorded footage, to demonstrate the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sentencing
The South Gauteng High Court imposed life sentences for the murder, along with additional sentences for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Moodley received a sentence of 15 years, while Samantha was handed 12 years.

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Phindi Mjonondwane, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, affirming that justice had been served for the victim and his family.

He stated, “The complainant left his father at home to go to the bank around 10:30 AM, leaving the gate open.
“Upon returning at approximately 11:45 AM, he discovered his father severely injured and bound in the passage.
“The complainant immediately contacted their family doctor and emergency services.
“An autopsy determined that the cause of death was severe head and cervical spine injuries, inflicted during a violent assault.”
Further investigation by the police led them to a pawn shop in Benoni, where they recovered stolen items from the house, linking them to the accused.”
