‘Let them support who they want’

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has empathised with South Africans who continue to support the All Blacks, given their close connection to New Zealand during Apartheid.

His comments come days ahead of SA’s second clash with their rugby rivals this weekend at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

RASSIE ON SOUTH AFRICANS WHO SUPPORT NEW ZEALAND

Speaking in a clip posted on social media, Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus shared his views on South Africans who support the All Blacks.

He said: “Obviously, there are historical reasons, bitterness, and heartache that’s contributed [to it]. That we must take, understand and mind.

He added, “Don’t be upset with those people if that’s what they feel they want to give back. Because there were times when they got support [from New Zealand].

“Why would you get upset with someone if you haven’t won them over yet? If there is something you can do to win them over, fantastic. If there isn’t, respect their view.

“They can support who they want to let them be happy, just like our guys. That’s their choice. They know what would make them support South Africa. And if that hasn’t happened or cannot happen, then let’s make peace with it.”.

Meanwhile, Springbok Cheslin Kolbe claimed he was hoping the national squad would win over more support in Cape Town.

He said in a press conference: “We had a great trophy tour here after the World Cup with great support all over South Africa. Hopefully, we have won over more support”.

He added: “The only thing we can do more is to win and hopefully earn a bit more respect here. Yes, the All Blacks do have a good support base in Cape Town, but I’m sure the majority of supporters will be cheering on the Springboks.”

ALL BLACKS COACH ON SUPPORT: ‘SURPRISING, OVERWHELMING’

In a clip posted on their social media account, the All Blacks were seen being warmly welcomed by Cape Town fans.

Coach Jase Ryan said of the reception: “There is a good network of fans here. It means a lot to the boys. To see that many was probably surprising, and we were overwhelmed with how many were there.”
