‘You grew up at Pirates, you know how it works’ – Ex-Kaizer Chiefs star

Former Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United star Thuso Phala has once again touched on age cheating in football.

Last year, the 38-year-old former footballer admitted to using ‘two ages’; football age and his actual age. Speaking to former Orlando Pirates midfielder Michael Morton, the former winger backtracked his statement about lying about his age during his playing days. Phala played for Chiefs, United, Platinum Stars and also Bafana Bafana.

The former Kaizer Chiefs star says age cheating in football is normal in Africa.

“It is a reality that football players have different ages, you grew up at Pirates, you know how it works,” Phala told Michael Morton Talks Football.

“And going to Africa, you see these things and you meet people who come from foreign countries and tell us that I am using my brother’s age.

“So I was just saying it is something that is there in Africa that you have two ages, I was not saying I have two ages, I am saying it’s there,” Phala added.

During an interview with Kota and Chill Podcast, the former winger claimed his actual age wasn’t 37.

“Do you want to know my age or the football age? After all, there is age that you leave at home and then there is football age, which you use on the field,” the former Kaizer Chiefs footballer touched on age cheating.

“My football age is what you see right now, and there is something I left at home. Thuso Phala who played football is this age that you know.”

Thuso Phala’s real age a mystery?

Age cheating has been a talking point for decades even in South African football, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have been accused of age cheating for years. Last year, 32 Cameroonian U-17 players failed MRI age testing ahead of qualification games for the 2023 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.
